Why Should I Study 25-35 Hours per Week?
  • Science and math are hard!! Accept it!
  • The way you study and how often you do it will determine your success at Cal State Fullerton.
  • College is not the same as high school; you will need to learn new ways of studying, especially in science and math.
  • How hard you work now will determine your quality of life in the future.
  • Success is not easy; it takes determination, tenacity, and dedication to achieve high goals.
  • Good study habits will allow you to earn high academic achievement; this will allow you to have options to attend graduate school, medical school, or other professional schools.
  • For every one unit hour spent inside the classroom, you should study at least two hours outside the classroom.
How Should I Study Science and Math?
Science and mathematics are difficult majors! It will take time and strategies to master all the concepts that you will have to learn. Overtime you will decide what works best for you but in the meantime, here are a few tips for studying science and math while at Cal State Fullerton:
  • Science and math require you to UNDERSTAND the concepts, not just memorize them; you may be able to memorize concrete details but you will need to comprehend the relationships presented in order to fully understand what you are learning.
  • Develop study strategies that work best for you and your preferred style of learning; ask yourself, "do I learn best by hearing, seeing, or doing?"
  • Purchase your textbooks before the first day of class. Skim the chapters so that you can understand what material will be covered during the semester.
  • During the semester, always read the assigned chapter BEFORE class.
  • Review your lecture notes 1-2 days after that lecture; write down questions about any concepts you do not understand.
  • Focus on the concepts taught in class; they are the most important concepts to your professor.
  • Learn how to ask questions in class and during the professor’s office hours.
  • Sit in front of the class to take better notes and avoid distractions.
  • Participate actively in your lab and workshop classes; they help reinforce the material from your lecture classes.
  • Study only with others if they match your determination and study habits.
  • Do not cram for exams!! Your professors will expect you to understand the concepts, not just regurgitate information from the book.
  • Get enough sleep, eat right, and find extracurricular activities that allow you to get rid of stress: yoga, tai chi, leisure reading, and hanging out with friends (once in a while).

These are only a few suggestions. As a science or math major, you are making a different commitment than other students who are not science and math majors. This is your full-time job. Make sure you develop good study habits in the beginning. If you plan to attend graduate or medical school it is imperative that you get good grades every semester.
