A number of scientists, including a team from the U.S. Geological Survey (in a study to be published this week in the Bulletin of the Seismological Society of America) have found evidence “directly linking” the uptick in Colorado and New Mexico earthquakes since 2001 to wastewater injection, a process widely used in fracking. Given this apparent link, how would it possibly be in the interest of local residents in an area as vulnerable to earthquake activity as ours, to have fracking operations permitted?
