In 1986, the Department of Conservation conducted a study of 70 abandoned oil and gas wells for methane and other gas accumulations in the Brea-Olinda oil field. About one-half of these sites contained methane at a hazardous or greater concentration. The study’s conclusion was that this area would not be appropriate for commercial, industrial or residential development. As home development has been constantly encroaching into oil fields what further studies or information have been available to developers and prospective homeowners in these areas? Who is responsible for evaluating if the land under and around our homes is safe?
