CSU-Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation (CSU-LSAMP)The CSU-LSAMP program is supported by funds from the National Science Foundation (NSF grant # HRD-0331537), the CSU Office of the Chancellor, and the 22 participating CSU campuses. The goal of this program is to increase the number of targeted students who graduate with degrees in the sciences, technology, engineering, or math (STEM). The targeted students are individuals who have faced or face social, educational, or economic barriers to careers in STEM. Several strategies are employed to meet this goal including academic year workshops in key “gatekeeper” courses, a CSU-LSAMP Community College Transfer Scholars Program which provides up to 3 new transfer students with $1000 during their first year at CSUF, assistance with admission to graduate schools (GRE workshops, application help, fee waivers, etc.) and funds to attend research conferences. The capstone activity is an independent research experience with a faculty member at CSUF for which the students can receive a stipend and/or course credit.
For more information and application forms please contact Dr. Christina Goode at cgoode@fullerton.edu or Ms. Eileen Simkin, the LSAMP administrative assistant, at esimkin@fullerton.edu in MH 468. Applications are taken year-round.

Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) Research Scholars ProgramThe Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) Research Scholars Program at California State University Fullerton is supported by grant from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. The objective is to enhance the numbers of our students entering biomedical research careers. A three-fold approach exposes several tiers of students to intense, real-life biomedical research. Cohorts of four new students per year undergo an intense two year program, the objective being for them to enter graduate school and obtain the PhD or MD/PhD degree. In addition, pairs of high school students with one of their science instructors carry out a research projects in faculty laboratories for 5 weeks in the summer; community college students, and pairs of their faculty with CSUF faculty, carry out focused experiments to answer real research questions over two weekends in the Spring; and students selected from community colleges and the CSUF carry out ten weeks of research in CSUF faculty laboratories. Minority Access to Research Centers (MARC)The Minority Access to Research Careers Program is funded by the Division of Minority Opportunities in Research of the National Institute of General Medical Sciences (of the National Institutes of Health) for the purpose of providing a training program for honors minority undergraduate students in scientific research with the goal of increasing the number of minority students selecting graduate studies and research careers in the biomedical sciences. These programs typically involve an enriched curriculum and a summer research experience at another institution in addition to research on the home campus.Amybeth Cohen, Director McCarthy Hall 301A (714)278-2178 acohen@fullerton.edu http://marc.fullerton.edu (opens in new window) | ||||

Minority International Research Training (MIRT)The Minority International Research Training program is funded by the Fogarty International Center and the office on Minority Health of the National Institutes of Health. The purpose of the program is to support research experiences in international laboratories for both honors undergraduate minority students and minority graduate students with the goal of increasing minority student representation in the international research community and to increase the cooperation between foreign scientists and US minority scientists. Examples in the LA Basin include the LA Basin CSU Consortium for Minority International Research Training that works with a consortium of biomedical research laboratories at the Universities of Cambridge, London and Oxford. MIRT Programs at UCI and UCLA provide summer research opportunities in Mexico, South America, Africa, the Mid-East, and South East Asia.Marcelo Tolmasky, Director McCarthy Hall 382 (714)278-5263 mtolmasky@fullerton.edu http://stromboli.fullerton.edu/mirt.html (opens in new window) |

NSF - Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) ProgramThe Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) is a ten week summer program that provides $5000 stipends, travel, housing and meals for out of town participants or $5000 stipends and travel assistance for local participants. The program allows ten students, selected from applicants all over the country as well as from within CSUF, to undergo an intensive research experience by working as apprentices to individual faculty carrying out their research in many branches of chemistry, biochemistry, and chemistry education. The National Science Foundation (NSF) and the Dean of CNSM provide funds to support these students and faculty through three year grants, which the Chemistry Department has successfully renewed since 1990. The objective is to ignite the interest of our students in chemistry research to increase the numbers of young Americans entering research careers in these disciplines.
