Research Programs(STEM)² Strengthening Transfer Education & Matriculation in STEMThe (STEM)² grant project, funded by the Department of Education, is designed to encourage more community college Science, Technology, Engineering, Math (STEM) transfers to four-year institutions and ultimately, increase the number of Hispanic/Latino and low-income students attaining STEM baccalaureates. CSUF Summer Research Program in MathematicsThe goal of this program is to give our undergraduate students a meaningful exposure to mathematical research in preparation for subsequent graduate studies. In this first year of the program we have had limited funds for student support but nevertheless the response has been very encouraging, and the student research projects have been high quality. We are therefore confident that the program is sustainable and it is our intention to seek external funding that will enable us to give full financial support for the student participants in the future.Director: Dr. Stephen W. CSU-Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation (CSU-LSAMP)The goal of CSU-LSAMP is to increase the number of targeted students who graduate with degrees in the sciences, technology, engineering, or math (STEM). The targeted students are individuals who have faced or face social, educational, or economic barriers to careers in STEM. Several strategies are employed to meet this goal including academic year workshops in key “gatekeeper” courses, a CSU-LSAMP Community College Transfer Scholars Program which provides up to 3 new transfer students with $1000 during their first year at CSUF, assistance with admission to graduate schools (GRE workshops, application help, fee waivers, etc.) and funds to attend research conferences.Director: Dr. Christina Goode, cgoode@fullerton.edu; LSAMP administrative assistant: Julianne Stern, lsamp@fullerton.edu, (657) 278-3980 |

Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) Research Scholars ProgramThe goal of this program is to promote the flow of students into research careers in the biomedical sciences. The HHMI Research Scholars Program supports the involvement of undergraduate college students, as well as some high school science teachers and students, in three different endeavors:1. Weekend Research Experience for Weekend Research Scholars Targets the engagement of beginning community college students, high school students and some of their science and math teachers in research experiences that will excite their interest in chemistry, biology and mathematics. 2. Summer Research Experience for Summer Research Scholars Exposes undergraduates with some background in mathematics, chemistry and biology to actual, state of the art research, with the aim of stimulating their interest in biomedical research careers. Working one-on-one with individual faculty and their groups for 10 weeks, students will test hypotheses with current methods to learn first-hand how science is carried out to answer questions directly and indirectly about health and disease. 3. Two-Year Intensive Research Experience for Undergraduate Research Scholars Provides research, supportive studies and workshops for yearly cohorts of 4 undergraduates for who have exceptional potential for, and a serious commitment to, pursuing graduate and professional studies in the biomedical sciences, and who are willing to undergo rigorous preparation for that goal. Minority Access to Research Centers (MARC)The MARC training program offers an extraordinary opportunity for minority students seeking careers in biomedical research. The goals of the program are to provide first-rate research training of undergraduate participants, to place undergraduates into respected graduate programs and ensure their success in those programs. To achieve these goals, the program will provide MARC Scholars with a solid curriculum, strong intramural and extramural research experience, personalized career and academic advisement and experience in presenting research data on the CSUF campus and at national professional meetings. Minority Health International Research Training (MHIRT)The summer research experience provides MHIRT scholars with the opportunity to travel to a foreign institution and spend 10 weeks conducting research in the laboratory of their foreign research advisor. Southern California Ecosystems Research Program (SCERP)This program offers undergraduate biology students opportunities to perform independent research and prepare for careers in ecology and environmental biology. CIRM Bridges to Stem Cell Research (BSCR) ProgramThe Department of Biological Science at CSUF was awarded $1.28 million from the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine (CIRM) to place ten undergraduate students as interns in stem cell research laboratories at Children’s Hospital of Orange County (CHOC), UC-Irvine (UCI), UC-Riverside (UCR) and University of Southern California (USC). Research Careers Preparatory (RCP) ProgramThe RCP Program is a one-year program that provides students with the opportunity to explore research as a career through a specially designed pro-seminar course and associated field or laboratory activities. Participants in the program receive extensive academic and research mentoring support through two courses. These courses will prepare and train students to be successful in their major as future scientists (MS, PhD, DSc), future professionals (MD, MD-PhD, DO, OD, etc.), and more broadly as responsible citizens. Participants will carry out undergraduate research with a faculty member in the Departments of Biological Science, Chemistry/Biochemistry, Psychology, or other departments undertaking science-related research (Health Science, Computer Science, Mathematics).
