    About DIMENSIONS

DIMENSIONS provides undergraduate students the opportunity to become published in a peer-reviewed journal while acquiring familiarity with the submission process that will assist them in submitting their future work to journals in their field. DIMENSIONS will also recognize the high quality of undergraduate research by annually publishing CSUF students' best work in biology, biochemistry, chemistry, geology, mathematics and physics.
NSM takes great pride in those students engaged in research. The publication of a student driven journal will highlight the scholarly activity of some of the best and brightest that CSUF has to offer.

    - NSM Dean Kolf Jayaweera
Details on submitting work are available below in the Submission Guidelines.

    Mission

It is DIMENSIONS' mission to provide California State University Fullerton's College of Natural Sciences & Mathematics undergraduate research students an opportunity to publish their research, share their findings, and gain experience in the peer review publication process. DIMENSIONS is published annually by CSUF NSM and is intended to showcase the strength of undergraduate research and the mentorship that is available at CSUF. It is DIMENSIONS' intention to share this strength with various constituencies, including current and future students, faculty, grant funding sources, the CSUF campus and the greater scientific community.

    Submission Guidelines

These guidelines are for submissions of research articles and extended abstracts to DIMENSIONS. Following the guidelines below will speed the review process, and will also allow us to respond to you in a timely manner. Keep in mind that DIMENSIONS is a journal for the general student and faculty population of NSM, many of whom may not have deep knowledge of your discipline. Articles must be submitted by CSUF matriculated students only. Write your articles in a professional manner and in the language of your discipline, and be certain to provide enough reasonable background in order to promote understanding in a broad scientific audience.

    1. Article contents:
      1. Title of paper
      2. Abstract: approximately 250 words (In research articles only, extended abstracts should omit this section).
      3. Introduction
        1. Background: Explain and clarify key concepts/terms relevant to your research so a broad, scientific population can understand your work. Explain your research from a general content to a specific content.
        2. Problem: State the goals of your research, hypotheses teste or questions addressed, references to relevant research conducted, etc.
      4. Materials and Methods
      5. Results*
      6. Discussion*
      7. Conclusion
      8. Acknowledgements: no more than 50 words. Include source(s) of funding.
      9. References

      10. *Results and Discussion may be combined into one section, if necessary.

    2. The following should be included in the beginning of your article:
      1. Name(s) of author(s)
      2. Faculty mentor

    3. The paper should be in the following format:
      1. All text should be submitted in an electronic format, either as an MS Word file or a text file. If you are not able to submit your document in a Word file, please of consult your editor.
      2. Text should be in Times font and no smaller than 12-points.
      3. ONLY SPACE ONE TIME AFTER SENTENCES.
      4. Accompanying tables and figures should be submitted in the following format:
        1. Any figure (diagram, map, chart, etc.) or table generated by a computer should also be submitted in an electronic format. Graphics should be iin a jpg or gif file and spreadsheets should be in an MS Excel file. If you are not able to submit your document in the suggested formats, please consult with your appropriate editor.
        2. Please note that Dimensions is not it color, and figures should be submitted in grayscale.
        3. Tables and figures should be submitted in the actual size that you want them to appear in the journal. Since Dimensions articles are printed in a two or three column format, tables and figures must be one, two, or three columns wide (approximately 2, 4.25 or 6 inches wide, respectively).
        4. For figures not generated by a computer (photographs, etc.) submit a scannable copy to the board. We will scan them for you.
      5. Special note regarding figures:
        1. Number figures sequentially, e.g. - Figure 1, Figure 2...
        2. Provide a caption with each figure - each caption should be detailed enough so that the figure can be read independently of the text.
        3. Label diagrams clearly and legibly
Text within figure should have letters with a minimum of 2mm in length.
        4. Report measurements with standard deviation values if relevant.
        5. Refer to all figures in the main text of the article
      6. Special note regarding tables:
        1. Number tables sequentially, e.g. - Table 1, Table 2...
        2. Label tables thoroughly.
        3. Refer to all tables in the text of the article
        4. Provide a heading for each table. This should compensate for no caption, and should explain the table in general, independently of the text.
        5. Use footnotes if further explanation is necessary:
          1. Treat each footnote as a separate paragraph: Indent the first line three spaces and end with a period. Place general information about the table in the first footnote. Precede the entry with "Notes:" in italics rather than with a symbol. Footnotes should appear in the same order as the symbols were used in the table. Follow the footnote section with a single horizontal line.
