The federal government has launched initiatives to support the recruit, support, and retention of mathematics and science teachers. The CSU system and California State University Fullerton continue to be responsive to these goals. Below are links to reports, programs, projects, and initiatives at Fullerton, the CSU Chancellor’s Office, California Department of Education, and federal levels.

Federal:

The 2006 Report from the Committee on Prospering in the Global Economy of the 21st Century makes four recommendations along with 20 implementation actions that federal policy-makers should take to create high-quality jobs and focus new science and technology efforts on meeting the nation's need to bolster U.S. competitiveness and pre-eminence in the market place, science, and technology. Notice what is at the top of this list!
  • Increase America's talent pool by vastly improving K-12 mathematics and science education;
  • Sustain and strengthen the nation's commitment to long-term basic research;
  • Develop, recruit, and retain top students, scientists, and engineers from the U.S. and abroad; and
  • Ensure that the United States is the premier place in the world for innovation.

Committee Report: Rising Above The Gathering Storm: Energizing and Employing America for a Brighter Economic Future Committee on Prospering in the Global Economy of the 21st Century: An Agenda for American Science and Technology, National Academy of Sciences, National Academy of Engineering, Institute of Medicine (February 2006)

The Secretary's Mathematics and Science Initiative was launched in February 2003 to engage the public in recognizing the need for better mathematics and science education for all children; initiate a campaign to recruit, prepare, train, and retain teachers with strong backgrounds in mathematics and science; and develop a research base to improve our knowledge of what boosts student learning in mathematics and science. Below are projects and reports generated from this initiative.

California Department of Education:

California’s schools are experiencing a critical need for more fully qualified math and science teachers. In turn, the state’s industries needs a better qualified workforce whose skills are stronger in science, math and technology if the state’s economy is to recover and grow. “If California is to be a leader in tomorrow's economy, we need to put more emphasis on science and math instruction,” said Governor Schwarzenegger. “The Science and Math Initiative will expand the efforts of our UC and CSU systems, with the goal of graduating at least four times as many new science and math teachers by the year 2010.” Below are projects and reports generated from this initiative.
