| CoAST goals include: |
- Creating conditions that increase K–12 student interest and promote student achievement in science, especially to the underrepresented groups in the profession
- Enhancing the preparation of future teachers in science content and pedagogy
- Increasing the number of undergraduate students selecting science teaching as a career
- Increasing teacher retention for existing classroom teachers and non–compliant NCLB teachers

CoAST was developed through the recognition that any efforts to attract more students to science teaching as a career, to better prepare these future teachers, and to promote teacher retention must be coordinated at multiple levels because success at one level ultimately is dependent on success at all the others.
CoAST is a multifaceted project that seeks, through a series of interrelated and articulated strategies at the elementary, secondary, community college, university, preservice and inservice levels, to achieve the goals and objectives of the program, enhance, and coordinate existing yet previously unrelated programs. |

| CoAST continuum programs and services include: |
| Future Teachers |
| Future Teachers is preservice teacher enhancement program which provides CSU–eligible high school juniors and seniors in the nine AUHSD district high schools with a one–semester, two unit college–credit course (EDSC 110: The Teaching Experience), including a weekly seminar with science content and pedagogy, science tutoring experiences, special day on the university campus, and career and academic advising. |

| Center for Careers in Teaching |
| The CSUF Center for Careers in Teaching provides up–to–date, accurate information to students planning to become elementary, middle school, or high school science teachers. They provide ongoing informative seminars and early academic advising and counseling to best prepare for science teaching. They also work with the local community colleges to facilitate the transition of transfer science students who are going to become teachers. |

| Paraprofessional Teacher Training Program (PTTP) |
| The PTTP Program in collaboration with Fullerton College and California State University, Fullerton and its credentialing programs trains paraprofessionals to become certificated teachers in Science. PTTP pays for tuition and related fees at Fullerton College and CSU Fullerton. |

| PreInternship Program (becoming “highly qualified”) |
| The program assists individuals who still need assistance with science subject matter competency (training and test reimbursement fees), completing prerequisite courses and acceptance into approved teacher credentialing programs. The length of support is one to two years. |

| Integrated Science Credential |
| Beginning Fall 2005, a four–year Integrated Science Credential will be offered by community colleges and California State University, Fullerton whereby a student can complete a degree and a preliminary science teaching credential in a four-year time frame. |

| Internship |
| The program provides an opportunity for science candidates to move from Pre Intern (or emergency permit) to University Internships and assists districts by providing quality training and support including a mentor “buddy” teacher and released sub days. Interns receive full pay (3/5s, 4/5s, 5/5s), benefits, and credit toward tenure. |

| Subject Matter Preparation Program and Single Subject Credential in Science |
| The program includes required professional courses, breadth courses, and concentration in Biology, Chemistry, Geological Sciences, or Physics leading to subject matter competency at California State University, Fullerton. |

| Beginning Teacher Support and Assessment (BTSA)/Induction |
| The program provides specialized training, support and formative assessment to assist beginning science teachers develop the skills critical to teaching success. This is accomplished via a trained CFASST Support Provider who through the CFASST process supports the development of teaching knowledge, skill, and ability through formative assessment and promotes collaboration and communication among beginning and experienced teachers. It is aligned to California Standards for the Teaching Profession and the K–12 state adopted academic content standards for students. |

| AUHSD Professional Development Center (PDC) |
| Through the Anaheim Union High School District (AUHSD) Professional Development Center (PDC), a fully equipped 2,800 square foot training facility centrally located at the District Office, ongoing science professional development opportunities are provided with strong academic, high quality, research–based activities including national and state science content standards, diverse teaching and learning methods and styles, infusion of technology into instruction and performance assessment, pedagogical elements, and the use of academic English for all English Language Learners. Teachers register online through the district web site for all workshops. Transcripts of individual attendance are maintained on line. |

| Master of Arts in Teaching Science |
| The primary objectives of the Master of Arts in Teaching Science are to provide advanced course work in science curriculum designs appropriate to the professional responsibilities of science educators, to provide research and seminar opportunities in contemporary issues in science education and to enable teachers to become more proficient in science disciplines appropriate to their academic teaching assignments in both elementary and secondary education. |

CoAST is administered by Anaheim Union High School District, California State University, Fullerton and Santa Ana College. CoAST is funded through a Teacher Quality Grant from the California Postsecondary Education Commission, Sacramento, CA. |
