Volunteer Opportunities

The club holds a few events throughout the year where the students serve the community in group projects.
This allows the student the opportunity to give back to the community, interact with fellow students and see what other opportunities and needs are in the local area.

The students are strongly encouraged to identify what interests them and to take the initiative to use the resources available to pursue these areas.

Project Description

General Description of Project:

Project Grace has two objectives:

1) To foster patient compassion and dignity amongst future health care providers as well as the general student body.

On a weekly basis, participants volunteer to help and visit patients at local

hospices through Heartland Hospice with flexible hours <2 hour minimum>

determined by both the participant and the volunteer coordinator.

2) To inform future health care providers of pressing issues they may encounter come time for their own practice.

On a monthly basis, participants attend hour-long medical ethics talks given

by professors and health care providers.

Description and age of participants:

This project is open to anyone willing to spend their time with patients that don’t have much time left.

Directions:

Prior to volunteering with patients, students must complete orientation sessions designed to prepare them for the tasks and emotional issues inherent in hospice work.  The initial orientation will be held in the Volunteer Service Center (TSU 2; on the same level as “Rock and Roll Pasta”) at 11:30 am on the Friday of the second week of each month*.  Consequent orientation sessions will be held at the  Orange County Heartland Hospice Office at times determined by the participant and the hospice volunteer coordinator.

Hospice volunteers will visit hospice patients at different locations determined at the patient’s request.

Hospice volunteers are urged to attend “Check Up” Meetings to share their insights and patient progress with one another.  These meetings will be held at 11:15 at the Volunteer Service Center (TSU 2) on Friday of the 1st,2nd,and 3rd week of each month*.

Monthly medical ethics talks will take place in the TSU in Room________  at noon on the Friday of the fourth week of each month*.

*Note: The times and locations are subject to change; in such an instance participants will be notified via email of the alterations as soon as possible.
